WHS Percussion

The percussion ensemble at Westside consists of several different ensembles that happen throughout the year. In the fall the primary focus is using class time to rehearse marching band music. There are two classes in the fall, the front ensemble class and the battery percussion class. In the spring, these classes shift over to Intermediate and Advanced percussion classes that coincide with the two competitive concert band classes (Symphonic Winds and Wind Ensemble). Placement in all sections and classes are all based upon audition. In addition to percussion ensemble, the percussion classes will actively participate with the concert bands in UIL Concert and Sight Reading. The band they participate with is the same one that lines up with their class period. Students involved in any of the classes are required to attend all functions/contests and be at every rehearsal outside of school.

The WHS percussion section is also an active participant in TCGC (Texas Colorguard Circuit) in the spring. This is not a required activity. Being a part of the indoor percussion ensemble is completely optional. However, to be involved in the ensemble students must also be an active part of a major ensemble in band (percussion class/concert band). Being involved in the indoor percussion ensemble requires students to meet for rehearsals outside of the school day as well as requires them to attend competitions.

Chop Building!
This section of the percussion website is dedicated to helping build up endurance, strength, and technique through playing various rudiments and motions at varied tempos. At the moment, this will be geared towards rudimental percussion but expect to start finding keyboard stuff at some point.
